FAQs

Who are SERV?
SERV is a registered charity (No. 284455) that provides a free out of hours transportation service for NHS Hospitals 365 days per year, between 19:00 and 06:00 weekday evening and 24hrs a day at weekends and on public holidays. SERV transports blood products and other urgent consignments allowing hospitals to divert financial and staff resources elsewhere. All of our riders are volunteers who donate their own time and fuel to providing a free service to hospitals.

What vehicles do we use?
Most of our members use their own car or motorcycle but we also have our own small fleet which enables us to reduce the financial burden on our vounteers. Currently we operate a BMW R1200RT motorcycle and a Vauxhall Astra van. Having the van enables us to provide a service to our client hospitals when the weather is too cold to safely transport blood by motorcycle or when the quantities required are much larger.

What do you transport?
We transport blood, pathology samples, patient notes, surgical equipment, frozen Human milk - basically anything that a hospital may call a courier to transport out of hours. We will do this for free saving the hospital approximately £2 per mile.

Who are our volunteers?
Our volunteers come from all walks of life. We have engineers, salespeople, lawyers, police officers, postal workers, service personnel - retired and serving. All human life is here!

What are you paid?
We are not! All our members give up their time free of charge. Whether carrying out deliveries, controlling or fundraising in the streets, it is all at our own expenses. When using our own vehicles, the fuel and maintenance costs are ours as well.

What area do we cover?
We service hospitals across Hampshire, Dorset and South Wiltshire. Our volunteers may typically ride from Havant to the Blood Bank in Southampton and then deliver to a hospital in Dorset. We may collect frozen milk from a Sussex colleague at Chichester and then deliver it to the processing unit at the Princess Anne hospital in Southampton. Check out the ABOUT>OUR CLIENTS link

If I donate money, what does it pay for?
Any funds that SERV receive go towards the upkeep of the marked vehicles. On rare occasions Stuart puts in a petty cash voucher for more Post-It notes, but none of the money that gets donated goes to the members.

What can I do?
You can volunteer to assist us. Whether as a rider, a controller or as a fundraiser, we always need more helpers. If you do not have time to assist, you can make a donation.
